Course Content

The Master of Education Extension Subject German provides students with practicable specialised and didactic knowledge of the German language that enables them, as educators, to design teaching, learning, and educational processes for German language instruction. Students will gain an overview of the interrelationships between the individual areas of Recent German Literature, Linguistics, and Medieval Studies, as well as develop the ability to apply in-depth academic methods and knowledge and to work independently in accordance with academic principles. They will be capable of presenting and justifying the socio-cultural significance of education in language, literature, and media, including its historical dimension, to a variety of different audiences. They will also have familiarity with orientational knowledge concerning the development of language and literary skills in learners and will possess the practical, methodological, and theoretical fundamentals required for the transition to professional practice.

Course Structure

The degree programme is modular and requires participation in subject-specific and didactic modules as well as a master's thesis totaling 120 credit points. The subject-related part consists of five modules from the BA course German Studies Major 50%, four modules from the Master of Education course and an oral final examination. The didactic part contains three didactic courses.. A special feature of the degree programme is the Blended Module: this provides an opportunity for inter-university collaboration with the Heidelberg University of Education, providing a combination of theory and methodology and specialised didactics of the German language.

In the supplementary subject German, students must have language proficiency in English and one additional foreign language (level B2). Proof of language proficiency must be submitted on the day of registering the Master's thesis at the latest.

German can only be studied as a subject comprising 120 credits (standard period of study 4 semesters).
