Course Content
The Degree Programme Component in the Master of Education Vocational Teaching Profession in German provides students with practicable specialised and didactic knowledge of the German language that enables them, as educators, to design teaching, learning, and educational processes for German language instruction. Students will gain an overview of the interrelationships between the individual areas of Recent German Literature, Linguistics, and Medieval Studies, as well as develop the ability to apply in-depth academic methods and knowledge and to work independently in accordance with academic principles. They will be capable of presenting and justifying the socio-cultural significance of education in language, literature, and media, including its historical dimension, to a variety of different audiences. They will also have familiarity with orientational knowledge concerning the development of language and literary skills in learners and will possess the practical, methodological, and theoretical fundamentals required for the transition to professional practice.
Course Structure
The degree programme component is modular and comprises a subject component of 31 credit points (18 credit points are devoted to subject-specific science, 13 credit points to subject-specific didactics). It requires participation in two major seminars (Recent German Literature and either Recent German Literature, Linguistics, or Medieval Studies), three courses in German didactics, the Blended Module and a final module, consisting of a concluding colloquium and presentation of the Master's thesis or a lecture. The topic for the Master's thesis may be chosen from either the subject area German or that of Education Studies. A special feature of the degree programme is the Blended Module: this provides an opportunity for inter-university collaboration with the Heidelberg University of Education, providing a combination of theory and methodology and specialised didactics of the German language.
Knowledge of English and another foreign language (level B2) is required for the German sub-degree program (vocational teaching profession). Proof must be provided by the registration of the master's thesis at the latest.
