In granting its medals of honour, Charles University pays tribute to notable figures who have made a particularly outstanding contribution to developing the university and its faculty, or who have greatly advanced the promotion of science, learning and academic freedom. The 4EU+ Alliance is a group of six research-intensive universities in Europe. Besides Heidelberg and Prague, its members are Sorbonne University (Paris) and the Universities of Warsaw, Copenhagen, and Milan.
