Research Alumni Network
RAN – The network for former and current doctoral students and researchers, their academic supervisors and internationally active researchers with a Heidelberg background
Launched in 2011 on the initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, RAN has established itself in its first decade as an independent network under the umbrella of HAI with special offers and activities. Members of all disciplines and nations can benefit from the network at every stage of their career and engage in it in just as many ways. In addition to researchers at Ruperto Carola, RAN also welcomes international scientists from non-university research institutions in Heidelberg.
Who – how – where
You can find news about the scientific work of the network members under Research Alumni Updates. Topics are:
- Prizes, Awards, Honours
- Activities in new research projects

FIRST STEPS IN THE WORLD OF SCIENCE
You have finished doctorate and want to continue working in science? Which path could be the right one for you? Where are new projects, collaborations or even job vacancies? Take advantage of HAI's Research Alumni Network and meet experienced scientists as mentors, stay up to date on new research projects or possible research funding and expand your worldwide scientific contacts. You yourself are a role model for young doctoral researchers.
SUCCESSFUL IN SCIENCE
Expand your network with contacts to other researchers at Heidelberg University. Subscribe to the RAN Newsletter for updates on projects, activities and events. Become one of our worldwide RAN Ambassadors and share your personal Heidelberg experience with young researchers. Find current offers for research funding in the scholarship exchange. Apply for an HAIreconnect grant and come back to the Neckar for another research stay.
EMERITI – SCIENCE FOR A LIFETIME
Are you a retired full-blooded scientist and don't want to sit still? Subscribe to the Research Alumni Newsletter and keep your finger on the pulse of research, read reports by active researchers or write your own contribution. As a mentor, you can pass on your experience to young scientists and learn about new research approaches. As a RAN Ambassador, you can recommend Heidelberg as a research location and inspire future guest researchers to come to the university.
Programmes with RAN
HAIreconnect is a programme for former guest researchers and international junior researchers with a connection to Heidelberg University or a research institution associated with the University who would like to initiate academic projects or refresh academic contacts for the first time or again during a short stay in Heidelberg.
In the Ambassador Programme, RAN members abroad are actively involved in promoting Heidelberg University. They provide information about research opportunities in Germany, advise on stays in Heidelberg and contribute in many ways to making Heidelberg and also Germany even better known worldwide as an excellent research location.
In Mentoring, young researchers find contacts on topics related to research and career. Mentors can pass on their experience and mentees can benefit from their expertise. Mentoring enriches all phases of an academic career and also offers opportunities for exchange in other areas of life.
