Anniversary 2016 Looking Back at 20 Years of HAI
From July 14 to 17 2016, around 300 alumni and guests from more than 30 countries celebrated “20 Years HAI” together in Heidelberg. Various activities around the university and the city provided participants with opportunities to meet old friends, make new contacts, reminisce about the past and to delve once again into the world of Heidelberg University!
The Alumni Weekend began with a welcome reception in a relaxed atmosphere in the new Mathematikon. In summery temperatures, the participants got to get in the mood for the anniversary weekend together. The main celebration took place on Friday morning with Rector Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Bernhard Eitel in the university's Alte Aula. Alumnae and alumni of various nationalities discussed the topic “Studying and researching internationally – bridging borders”. The event was followed by a champagne reception on the Bel Etage. The highlight of the weekend was the Ruperto Carola Summer Ball on Saturday evening. Under the motto “The university swings!”, the guests danced and celebrated together in the courtyard of the New University until well after midnight. The event concluded on Sunday with the now legendary Riverboat Shuffle, where the participants rounded off the alumni anniversary with a trip into the romantic Neckar Valley with food, drink and music. In addition to the central events, the university's departments and institutes presented a varied program: lectures, discussions, workshops and tours offered insights into current research topics and academic life at the various faculties and institutions. City walks enabled participants to visit familiar sites in Heidelberg and discover new facets of the Neckar city at the same time. We look back happily and with satisfaction on “20 years of HAI” – it was an unforgettable experience, definitely our HAIlight of the year 2016.

People from all over the world are the driving force and soul of the HAI network. We show this with joy and pride: in our publications such as the alumni magazine, newsletter, flyers etc. and also on the websites, alumnae and alumni make up the diverse appearance of HAIsociety. This is as varied and interesting as the community it represents. During the anniversary, many HAI members from near and far had their photos taken and some great portraits of our alumni were created! All participants in the campaign received small thank-you gifts – and three lucky participants were chosen to receive an additional surprise! Congratulations!
