In the following, we have compiled some information on funding of studies for you. The best information can be provided by the respective contacts.
The social counselling service of the student services organisation (Studierendenwerk) will answer any questions on funding of studies and general life planning.
You can also find a good overview of financing options on the website of the German student services organisation (Studierendenwerk).
Students with severe disabilities may also have their share of the semester ticket for public transport and VRNnextbike reimbursed. They can submit their applications to the constituted student body. Find more information on this and an application form on the student council (StuRa) website.
German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG)
The subsidy under the German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) is a financial aid provided by the state for education; it is made up of a state loan and a grant at equal shares. Students with disabilities can also receive guaranteed benefits beyond the maximum duration of funding.
Information on how to apply, funding amounts, and funding requirements can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Integration aid
You can apply for integration aid (in accordance with §§ 53 et seq. in conjunction with § 97 SGB XII) if you, as a person with a health impairment, are significantly impaired in your ability to participate in community life.
Benefits can be granted, among other things
- for living in a residential facility
- for outpatient assisted living
- for integration of students with disabilities at the university
- for residential equipment that meets the special needs of people with disabilities
The supra-local social welfare agencies will often require a statement from the university in the case of procurement requests. We are happy to assist you with this.
You may apply for integration aid at the competent social welfare agency in your place of main residence.
Housing benefit
Like subsidies under the German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), housing benefit is a state subsidy. It takes the form of a rent subsidy. It is financed half by the federal government and half by the Länder and usually is not subject to reimbursement. Every citizen generally has the right to apply for housing subsidy, though this is a little more complicated for students who are entitled to maintenance payments during their initial education. It is, therefore, only granted in special cases.
The housing subsidy office of the Office for Social Affairs and Senior Citizens is responsible for persons with their main places of residence in Heidelberg.
Foundations and scholarships
Foundations and scholarships are another way to finance your course of studies. Many scholarships are available, and applying is certainly a good idea if your academic performance is good to very good. You may receive funding at up to the maximum BAföG rate – without having to repay it!
