Drawing on critical debates about the role of museums and community-based organisations in safeguarding intangible heritage, the lecture considers the implications of safeguarding living culture from a museological perspective. To this end, it presents relevant examples of case studies from Europe and around the world, in order to embed the conceptual framework of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, which is based on the active participation of heritage communities, in the main areas of museum practice, notably collections, exhibitions and public engagement.

Marilena Alivizatou is Honorary Lecturer at University College London (UCL). She has longstanding interests in intangible heritage as discourse and praxis, which led to her two monographs, Intangible Heritage and the Museum (2012) and Intangible Heritage and Participation (2021), several journal articles and international collaborations. She completed graduate (2004), doctoral and postdoctoral studies in cultural heritage and museum studies at UCL and holds an undergraduate degree in theatre studies from the National University of Athens.
