Foreign LanguagesGerman as a Foreign Language
Acquire, refresh or improve your German language skills for everyday use: Alumni registered with HAI can take language courses at their university
You never stop learning. Whether out of pure interest in the German language and culture or for living and working in Germany – in the online courses of the International Study Centre ("Internationales Studienzentrum" / "ISZ") of Heidelberg University you will become fit (again) for everyday communication. As you will be attending classes together with current international visiting scholars and doctoral students, there will be plenty of opportunity for authentic exchange about living and working in Heidelberg.
Winter Term 2024/25
When?
The ISZ courses run from 15 October 2024 until 6 February 2025. Classes take place as online video conferences. All courses take place simultaneously during the week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 19:30 (CET).
One semester course comprises 60 classes (60 x 45min), divided into 30 sessions of 90 minutes.
What?
On offer are general language courses for all levels ranging from A1 (absolute beginners) up to C2 (advanced learners). You complete one course per semester. In the following semester you normally move on to the next course level.
At all levels, you will be training the 4 basic skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and simultaneously learning about German culture. The goal is to develop the linguistic and intercultural competences that you need for your daily life and work in Germany, particularly in an academic context. The more advanced the course level, the more important become formal (written) grammar structures and vocabulary. However, the courses are not designed to prepare you for a specific exam format.
Online placement test – Tue 8 October 2024, 18:00 (CET)
If you did not attend a course with the ISZ in the immediately preceding semester, you need to take an online placement test in order to be assigned to the most fitting level.
For Whom?
This offer is aimed at alumni of Heidelberg University who are registered as members of HAI and their partners.
Costs?

You will receive a refund of your course fee only if you e-mail your cancellation by that deadline to the ISZ via: gastwissenschaftler@isz.uni-heidelberg.de
Please also note:
