99 Projects for a Post-Fossil Future
Paving the way for solutions for tomorrow – this is what motivates scientists from all Baden-Württemberg state universities to work towards a future in which fossil raw materials and fuels are increasingly replaced by sustainable alternatives. The nine state universities – including Heidelberg University – now present 99 research projects contributing to this goal.
“‘The Future. Since 1386’ – that is how Heidelberg University understands itself. From a scientific angle it is beyond doubt that the future needs an energy supply that manages without fossil fuels. And that an ever more digitalized world requires revolutionary new approaches to drastically lower energy consumption. Many of our researchers contribute to this future in very varied ways. They explore new computational methods, they develop processes to turn waste heat into electricity, they increase the logistic efficiency of big hospitals. Yet they also examine how energy transition measures are discussed in the population,” underlines Prof. Dr. Frauke Melchior, Rector of Heidelberg University. “That way our scientists lay the foundations not only for technical innovations but also for just transition,” adds Prof. Dr. Karin Schumacher, Vice-Rector for Quality Development and Sustainability. Ruperto Carola will continue to boost research in the area of sustainability in the framework of its recently adopted Sustainability Strategy.
