The next Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session takes place on Friday, November 22, 2024, 7 pm - 8.30 pm CET. The topic will be: Conflict resolution and cooperation - what to learn from great apes. The speaker will be Dr. Alejandro Sánchez Amaro, Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Stirling/Scotland. He received a Bachelor´s in Biology from the University Autònoma of Barcelona (his hometown) and a Master´s in Primatology from the University of Barcelona before getting his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPIEA) in Leipzig, supported by the DAAD. Dr. Sánchez Amaro then held postdoctoral positions at the MPIEA (Comparative Cultural Psychology Department) and the University of California in San Diego (Cognitive Science Department) before moving to the UK.

International economic relations in times of crises – the German government´s approach. The speaker will be Dr. Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and Member of the German Parliament (Bundestag). Ms. Brantner studied Political Sciences at the Sciences Po in Paris and the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, New York City, before receiving a PhD degree from the University of Mannheim (Thesis: “The reformability of the United Nations”). She has also served as a Member of the European Parliament.

The next Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session takes place on Friday, September 20, 2024, 7 pm - 8.30 pm CEST (GMT/UTC +2). The topic will be: Political prisoners and forced labor in the East German dictatorship (GDR) – an eyewitness account by a political historian. The speaker will be Peter Keup, PhD student of Political History at Friedrich Wilhelm University Bonn and former political prisoner of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the German Democratic Republic. After his expatriation and being sold to West Germany – as one of almost 34,000 political prisoners -, he moved to Essen, where he owned a dance school before receiving a BA degree in Cultural Studies from FernUniversität Hagen and an MA degree in Political-Historical Studies from Friedrich-Wilhelm University Bonn.

The topic will be Feminist Ecological Economics Lens: Understanding Unpaid Care Work and Decision Making Agency of Rural Women of Bangladesh. The speaker will be DAAD scholarship holder Jasia Tahzeeda from Bangladesh, PhD student of experimental economics at Philipps University Marburg, Germany. She received a Bachelor ́s Degree in Economics from the International Islamic University Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, a Master ́s in Development Studies from BRAC University and a Master ́s in Environmental Science and Management from North South University, both located in Dhaka/Bangladesh.

The topic will be Civil Society: Nailing Jelly to the Wall - or a Democratic Alternative? The speaker will be Wolfgang Goede, international science journalist, knowledge facilitator, author, lecturer and radio host based in Munich, Germany, and Medellín, Colombia. He received an M.A. degree in Communication Science and Political Science from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and his main research focus lies on the latest academic and technological developments of our time. As a fellow of the Maecenata Think Tank in Berlin, he regularly publishes his research and best-practice highlights on this platform.

The next Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session takes place on Friday, June 7, 2024, 7–8.30 pm CEST (GMT/UTC +2). The topic will be Renewable H2 production from biogas – a decentralized approach for the local community. The speaker will Dr. Gianluca Pauletto, project leader at Technical University Munich, CEO of SYPOX and chair of the steering committee of the ReTech/Horizon project. He received a Bachelor ́s degree in Chemical and Material Engineering and a Master ́s degree in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Padova/Italy and a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique Montreal, Canada.

Referent ist Dr. Marc-Denis Weitze, Privatdozent am Lehrstuhl für Wissenschaftskommunikation der Technischen Universität München (TUM) und Leiter des Bereichs „Kommunikation/Gesellschaft“ bei acatech, der Deutschen Akademie der Technikwissenschaften. Weitze promovierte in Chemie an der TUM und absolvierte zudem an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München ein Magister-Studium der Philosophie. Er war lange wissenschaftlicher Leiter der Wissenschaftstage Tegernsee und ist bis heute auch als Wissenschaftsjournalist und –kabarettist sowie als Organisator von Science-Slams aktiv.

Referent ist Alexander Föhr MdB, Abgeordneter des Deutschen Bundestages für den Wahlkreis Heidelberg und Berichterstatter der CDU/CSU-Fraktion im Bundestagsausschuss für Bildung, Forschung und Technikfolgenabschätzung. Herr Föhr studierte Politikwissenschaft, Öffentliches Recht und Geschichte an der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und war nach seinem M.A.-Abschluss mehrere Jahre lang im Referat des Oberbürgermeisters von Heidelberg sowie als Leiter des Bereichs Kommunikation und Politik der AOK Baden-Württemberg tätig.

Das Thema lautet: Lust auf Leistung – Wie wir Arbeit (wieder) lieben lernen. Referent ist Dr. Ingo Hamm, Professor für Wirtschaftspsychologie an der Hochschule Darmstadt. Nach Studium und Promotion an der Universität Mannheim gründete er ein Markt- und Trendforschungsinstitut, ehe er als Berater bei McKinsey anheuerte, wo er im Anschluss auf Konzernseite im Bereich Human Resources und Kommunikation arbeitete. Danach folgte er seiner Leidenschaft für angewandte Forschung und berät bis heute Menschen und Organisationen bei den Herausforderungen der neuen Arbeitswelt. Als promovierter Wirtschaftswissenschaftler und Diplom-Psychologe ist Ingo Hamm Autor erfolgreicher Sachbücher wie „Sinnlos glücklich“ oder „Wettbewerbsfaktor Mensch". Er leitet das Darmstädter Institut für Wirtschaftspsychologie.

The next Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session takes place on Friday, April 19, 2024, 7– 8.30 pm CEST (GMT/UTC +2). The topic will be Super election year 2024 – the global contest between democracy and autocracy. The speaker will be Dr. Stefan Wurster, professor of policy analysis at Technical University of Munich (TUM). Wurster studied Political Science, History and Public Law in Heidelberg and Barcelona and received his PhD in 2010 with distinction (summa cum laude). From 2009 to 2015 he was a research associate in Heidelberg, and from 2015 to 2016 he worked as an assistant professor at the University of Trier. Since 2016 he has been professor of policy analysis at TUM’s Bavarian School of Public Policy.

The speaker will be Karina Theurer, international law expert and lecturer at Humboldt University Berlin. She received a State Exam degree in Law from Humboldt and an M.A. degree in Latin American Studies from Freie University Berlin. Ms. Theurer has also led the Institute for Legal Intervention at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights and the Law Clinic for Human Rights at Humboldt and has worked as a lecturer and research associate at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg and Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. She currently works as an advisor for the Namibian law firm Dr. Weder, Kauta & Hoveka, focusing on the lawsuit against the joint declaration and for reparations.

Das Thema lautet: Jüdisches Leben in Deutschland 2024 – ein Gespräch mit Ehrenamtlichen des Projektes „Meet a Jew“. „Meet a Jew“ ist ein von der Bundesregierung unterstütztes Projekt des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland, das nicht-jüdische Menschen mit Jüdinnen und Juden, dem Judentum sowie ihrem Leben in Deutschland vertraut machen und dadurch Unwissenheit, Vorurteile und Antisemitismus überwinden möchte – und das nicht erst seit dem Terrorangriff der Hamas am 7.10.2023. Rund 500 Freiwillige suchen u.a. an Universitäten das Gespräch und beantworten Fragen. Moderiert wird die Veranstaltung von Projektkoordinatorin Mascha Schmerling.

The speaker will be Ifeoluwa Abulude from Nigeria, PhD student in the International PhD Program for Agricultural Economics, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Food Systems (IPPAE) at Justus Liebig University Giessen/Germany. In Nigeria, he acquired both his bachelor's degree (Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) and his master's degree (Landmark University, Omu-Aran) in Agricultural Extension & Rural Development.

Herr Krause absolvierte ein Diplomstudium in Biochemie in Cork/Irland und Leipzig, wo er unter Nobelpreisträger Svante Pääbo mit genetischen Untersuchungen am Neandertaler und an Höhlenbären auch promovierte.

The 121st HTO session takes place on Friday, April 21, 7-8.30 pm CEST (GMT/UTC +2). The topic will be „Climate Diplomacy in Kashmir Conflict: The World’s Highest Battlefield and its Environmental Cost“. The speaker will be Pakistani filmmaker and researcher Mehmood Ali Khan, member of the Central Asian Faculty Development Program at the University of Central Asia (UCA) in Naryn/Kyrgyzstan and UCA-DAAD scholar working on his PhD project on Islamisation of cinema in Iran and Pakistan.

Referent ist Dr. Ohiniko M. Toffa, Kulturwissenschaftler an der Universität Bremen. Nach dem Studium der Germanistik und Kulturwissenschaft in Lomé, der Hauptstadt seines Heimatlandes Togo, promovierte er an der Uni Bremen 2019 mit einem Stipendium des DAAD. Bis März 2023 war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an den Völkerkundemuseen von Leipzig und Dresden und beschäftigte sich dort im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts mit der Provenienz von Sammlungen aus der früheren deutschen „Musterkolonie“ Togo (1884-1919).

The third Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session of 2023 takes place on Friday, February 3, 7-8.30pm CET (GMT/UTC +1). The speaker will be DAAD alumnus Dr. Alaksiej Kačanovič, post doctoral researcher at Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb/Croatia. He obtained his PhD degree in 2020 in theoretical particle physics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany. Having been expelled from Belarusian State University for his political engagement in the democracy movement in Belarus as a member of
the social democratic party “Hramada”, he received a Licentitate and a Master´s degree from Wroclaw University/Poland. In 2006, he obtained the Konstanty Kalinowski scholarship.

The fourth Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) session of 2023 takes place on Friday, February 10, 7-8.30 pm CET (GMT/UTC +1). The speaker will be Prof. Dr. Uğur Ümit Üngör, Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Amsterdam/The Netherlands and the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam. His main area of interest is the history and sociology of mass violence, with a particular focus on the modern and contemporary Middle East. He has won several academic awards and held visiting positions in Dublin, Vancouver, Budapest, Toronto, Los Angeles and Edinburgh. He has published various books and articles, is an editor of the Journal of Perpetrator Research and coordinated the Tadamon Massacre project.

The next Heidelberg Talks Online (HTO) takes place on Friday, January 27, 2023. The speaker will be Eunice Chiu, PhD student in Educational Science at the Faculty of Cultural and Behavioural Studies at Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. She holds a BA degree in Anthropology and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include green policy and the environment, migrational studies and educational justice.

Das nächste “Heidelberg Talks Online”-Treffen findet am Freitag, 20.01.2023 statt. Referentin ist Jana Mestmäcker, Psychologin (M. Sc.) und Aktivistin des Klimaschutz-Bündnisses „Letzte Generation“. Nach einem Auslandsjahr als Schülerin in Buenos Aires absolvierte sie an den Universitäten Hamburg, Lübeck und Örebro (Schweden) ein Psychologie-Studium, das sie 2017 mit einem Master abschloss. Danach sammelte Frau Mestmäcker in einem psychologischen Fachverlag Berufserfahrung, ehe sie ab 2019 als Psychologie-Dozentin in Göttingen tätig war. Diese Arbeit gab sie im vergangenen Jahr auf, um sich mit ganzer Kraft den Zielen der „Letzten Generation“ verschreiben zu können.

This week's Heidelberg Talk Online (HTO) will be about cinematic approaches to understanding artificial intelligence/artificial consciousness.
The speaker will be Dr. Amar Singh, Assistant Professor of English at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He is currently pursuing post-doctoral research at Bergische Universität Wuppertal/Germany, where he is working with the AI in Humanity Project Group.

Referenten sind Laura Plöger, Regionalwissenschaftlerin mit Schwerpunkt Lateinamerika und seit 15 Jahren bei der Welthungerhilfe im In- und Ausland aktiv, sowie Patrick Nathaus, Asienwissenschaftler mit Schwerpunkt Zentral- und Ostasien, seit diesem Jahr Teamleiter bei der Welthungerhilfe und zuvor Manager in der Privatwirtschaft, zuletzt bei Audi China.

Speaker of the next HTO session will be Wolfgang Raskob, Deputy Head of the Institute for Thermal Energy Technology and Safety (ITES) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), elected member of the Crisis Team of the German Radiation Protection Commission and Member of the Management Board of the European NERIS Platform on Emergency management.

In welches berufliche Umfeld soll mich mein Studium führen, wie gelingt der Berufseinstieg und welche Karrieremöglichkeiten bieten sich? Fragen dieser Art spielen künftig in der Alumni-Arbeit eine wichtigere Rolle, so dass wir dazu ein neues Team-Mitglied begrüßen.

Amanda Daquila, die die New Yorker Außenstelle der Universität Heidelberg leitet, hat am 27. Juni 2022 im Rahmen der Vortragsreihe „hei_INNOVATION talks: Entrepreneurship“ zum Thema „Intercultural Entrepreneurship“ gesprochen.
