At the interface between classical mathematics and computer science, Scientific Computing focuses on the development of methods and algorithms of applied mathematics, their implementation using modern computer technologies, and their application to real-world problems. Typical areas of application in Heidelberg are found in the natural sciences, life sciences and medicine, economics and social sciences, and the humanities.

Special Features and Characteristics

With a degree in Scientific Computing, students acquire a comprehensive profile in both mathematics and computer science. In addition, they specialize in an area of application of their choice and are involved in a real, interdisciplinary research context through participation in a research group.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science considers itself one of the leading mathematics faculties in Germany. This is confirmed by the results of numerous evaluations and rankings. The Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing, like the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, is characterized by a strong international network and numerous collaborations and joint research projects with institutions all over the world. Students benefit from this to a great extent, as an international exchange is possible for them even beyond the usual programs.
