Admission and study requirements Regulations for international students - residence permit

Where can the residence permit be applied for?

The Foreigners’ Registration Office in your place of residence in Germany is responsible for all questions regarding your residence status and applications for the issuance or extension of a residence permit. Before you can apply for or extend a residence permit there, you must register your place of residence with the Residents' Registration Office. Contact the Foreigners’ Registration Office approximately 8 weeks before your visa or residence permit expires to apply for an extension.

Please note that there are two different Foreigners’ Registration Offices in Heidelberg, depending on your place of residence (City of Heidelberg or Rhein-Neckar-Kreis District Office). An overview of the responsible Foreigners’ Registration Offices in and around Heidelberg can be found here:

Foreigners‘ Registration Offices in the Rhine-Neckar Region

Fees:

  • 100 € (new residence permit)
  • 93 € (extension of a residence permit)

Please note that you do not need to apply for a residence permit if the visa issued by the German embassy covers the whole duration of your stay in Germany.
