RankingUniversität Heidelberg: Number One in Germany in the Life Sciences

Outstanding placements in THE Subject Ranking also for medicine, Physical Sciences and the Humanities

The top position in Germany and 32nd internationally is held by Heidelberg University’s Life Sciences, according to the 2023/2024 Times Higher Education World University Ranking by Subject. Medicine has also performed exceptionally well, having improved by three places over last year to rank 35th at the international level and maintaining its prior-year second position in Germany.

The Physical Sciences likewise earn top placements in their subject group. They are ranked 42nd internationally and fourth in Germany. The THE Ranking by Subject puts the Arts and Humanities at Ruperto Carola in 37th place internationally, and they rank fifth in the Germany-wide evaluation. Psychology has improved by eighteen places over last year, now ranking 73rd and making the “Top 100” once again. In Germany it moves up from seventh to fourth position.

In the Life Sciences, Heidelberg University is followed at the national level by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in second place and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) in third place; internationally they are ranked 33rd (TUM) and 41st (LMU). In medicine, called Clinical and Health in the THE Ranking by Subject, Ruperto Carola is positioned between Charité – University Medicine Berlin (internationally ranked 27th) and LMU, which is ranked 50th in the international evaluation.

Placed 47th in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking, Heidelberg University is one of the “Top 50” universities worldwide and, after TUM and LMU Munich, is one of the best three universities in Germany. The criteria of the Ranking by Subject correspond to those of the overall THE Rankings but are weighted differently for each subject group. The calibration depends on various indicators in the five areas: teaching, research, research quality (previously citations), international outlook and industry.
