Course Content

The Faculty of Law at Heidelberg University enables students of law with a Bachelor’s degree from a university outside Germany to complete a two semester course to acquire the qualification “Legum Magister” (LLM). The Master’s degree programme is intended to be studied full-time in Heidelberg. Students become familiar with the key elements of the German legal system, including international and European law. Students also have the opportunity to further develop their knowledge in selected areas of law.

Course Structure

The degree programme consists of six modules:

  • I. Compulsory Module I: Civil Law
  • II. Compulsory Module II: Public Law
  • III. Compulsory Module III: Seminar
  • IV. Elective modules: lectures, seminars, colloquia
  • V. Magister thesis
  • VI. Oral Magister Examination

The foundations of German civil and public law are studied intensively in modules I and II. Module III ensures that a strong link is made between research and learning. The content of the module remains open. Students select module IV from a wide range of elective courses on various aspects of law, so-called foundational subjects and criminology. Students are free to select courses in various formats and with various forms of assessment. Module V, the Magister thesis, gives students the opportunity to advance their academic work. It is complemented by module VI, the oral Magister examination, which will focus on the area of law considered in the Magister thesis, and any neighbouring areas of law. Students are permitted to begin the Magister thesis only after they have successfully completed modules I and II.
