12 Heidelberg academics devote themselves to interdisciplinary research projects

The start of the 2025/2026 winter semester has seen a new class of fellows take up their assignment at Heidelberg University’s Marsilius Kolleg. Until September 2026, 12 Heidelberg academics from different disciplines devote themselves to interdisciplinary research projects and participate in joint discussions at the Kolleg. During their regular work meetings, the fellows will address questions such as how humans acquire and apply knowledge – and how such processes can be modeled in AI language models. Another project focuses on interdisciplinary collaboration in researching traditional crops that could contribute to sustainable food systems.

The 18th class of fellows at the Marsilius Kolleg includes Prof. Dr Tanja Bipp (psychology), PD Dr Gordon Feld (cognitive neuroscience), Prof. Dr Anette Frank (computational linguistics), Prof. Dr Thomas Greb (biosciences), Prof. Dr Nora Heinzelmann (philosophy), Prof. Dr Annette Hornbacher (anthropology), Prof. Dr Kerstin Kunz (translation studies), Prof. Dr Renata Campos Motta (sociology), Prof. Dr Christian Schaaf (human genetics), Prof. Dr Christian Schmahl (psychosomatic and psychotherapeutic medicine), Prof. Dr Christine Selhuber-Unkel (materials science) and Prof. Dr Katarina Weilert (law).

The Marsilius Kolleg, directed by theologian Prof. Dr Friederike Nüssel and genomicist Prof. Dr Michael Boutros, is designed to bring together hand-picked researchers from different scholarly cultures. The goal is to promote research-related dialogue between the humanities, law and social sciences, on the one hand, and the natural and life sciences, on the other. With the present class of fellows – they are appointed by the Rectorate of Ruperto Carola – a total of 231 fellowships have been granted since 2008.
