Accessibility Statement for the Digital Accessibility of the Campus Management System Heidelberg Campus Online (heiCO) and its contents
Heidelberg University is committed to making its campus management system, Heidelberg Campus Online (heiCO), as accessible as possible to all students, employees, and interested parties in accordance with applicable laws and the EU Directive 2016/2012 on the accessibility of websites and mobile applications. This accessibility statement describes the current implementation status for the website https://heico.uni-heidelberg.de.
Heidelberg Campus Online (heiCO) is a customized instance of the CAMPUSonline campus management system developed by Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) to meet the needs of Heidelberg University. The technical implementation, including accessibility features, is the responsibility of TU Graz. Therefore, Heidelberg University relies on close collaboration with TU Graz to further enhance the digital accessibility of heiCO.
The accessibility standards of CAMPUSonline follow the WCAG 2.1 guidelines at conformance levels A and AA, which largely complies with the requirements of EU Directive 2015/2012. Campus Online tests every system extension for accessibility. For example, accessibility tests are conducted for every new development, including contrast checks and screen reader compatibility tests. Additionally, more extensive accessibility tests are regularly carried out during major product updates with user participation. These tests not only confirm full accessibility of the pages but also help identify and address any newly discovered barriers.
Non-Accessible Contents and Limitations
Since a campus management software like heiCO involves handling complex processes, certain areas are not fully barrier-free but rather minimally restrictive and require additional documentation for end users.
The following contents are not fully accessible:
- Contrast settings: Logged-in users can adjust contrast settings, but contrast customization is not available outside of the login area. In the future, this function is planned to be made available to non-logged-in users as well.
- Local applications and text abbreviations allowing HTML: Some of these may contain partial accessibility barriers.
- Screen reader compatibility: For optimal compatibility, Campus Online recommends using NVDA and JAWS screen reader software on a PC or laptop. Other screen readers may have limitations.
- Navigation using screen readers or keyboard: On some pages in heiCO, there is currently no option to skip content when using a screen reader or keyboard navigation. CAMPUSonline is working on optimizing this feature as part of the transition to the new CO3 product design (partially implemented).
- PDF documents: PDFs generated or uploaded within the system may not always be fully accessible.
Heidelberg University is committed to identifying and removing existing barriers as quickly as possible in cooperation with Campus Online and continuously improving accessibility in heiCO.
