Mourning the death of alumnus Harald zur Hausen: The Nobel laureate in medicine and honorary professor at Heidelberg University died in May 2023 at the age of 87.

The long-standing Chairman of the Board of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), whose research laid the foundations for the development of a vaccine against cancer-causing human papillomaviruses, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in 2008. “With Harald zur Hausen, Heidelberg as a center of science is losing a visionary researcher whose groundbreaking findings in the field of tumor virology have received recognition worldwide,” said University Rector Prof. Dr Bernhard Eitel. “He also will be remembered as the driver of a highly productive cooperation between the DKFZ, the university and Heidelberg University Hospital.” As a member of the Heidelberg Medical Faculty, Harald zur Hausen was closely associated with Ruperto Carola for decades.
