During Your StayGerman Language Courses
Heidelberg University offers an extremely broad spectrum of courses to help you improve your language skills, no matter whether you are an absolute beginner, or an advanced learner of German.
Preparatory German Language Course
Exchange students who wish to improve their command of the German language before the start of the semester are strongly encouraged to take part in the Preparatory German Language Course offered by our International Study Center. This four week program takes place in the month before the lecture period starts (October/March) and includes 80 hours of language instruction at all levels.
Attending the course will not only improve your language skill, but also help you adjust to your new environment, become familiar with the University and build a new circle friends before the lecture period starts.
Additional German Courses for Regularly Enrolled Students (BA/MA/State Examination)
Free German courses are offered to regularly enrolled Bachelor's and Master's students both during the lecture period and in the semester break.
The aim of these courses is to teach students the basics of the German language without the pressure of examinations. The focus is on everyday communication for students with little or no previous knowledge of German. The goal is to enable students to hold simple conversations in German and communicate successfully in everyday situations. We offer courses for three target levels: A1, A2, and B1.
The course “Presentation and Discussion” is also offered. The focus here is on oral skills in a university context. The course is aimed at learners of German who already have an advanced level (B2). The students will learn how to adequately present and discuss academic topics in seminars. They will be enabled to articulate themselves more freely and with more self-confidence in class.
