Clara Schumann gave concerts in the museum’s great hall in Heidelberg on several occasions. On 11 November 1872 she again visited the Kurpfalz as her son Felix had just started studying law at Heidelberg University. On this visit to Heidelberg she also gave a concert, performing with the famous contralto Amalie Joachim. Clara Schumann took the stage despite the sudden death of her daughter on the eve of the concert, playing pieces by Beethoven, Handel, her husband Robert Schumann and Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, among other works. All musical pieces performed on this day can be seen on the concert’s programme from 1872.
In remembrance of this performance a lecture concert will take place on 10 December 2019 at the Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg. Music as a life force – this is the concert’s guiding theme.
