Exhibition

IN CELEBRATION OF HER 200TH BIRTHDAY.
CLARA SCHUMANN - ARTIST, BUSINESSWOMAN, MOTHER

Clara verändert

Exhibition in the Kurpfälzisches Museum Heidelberg
From 31 October 2019 bis 2 Febuary 2020

200 years after her birth, word has gotten around: Clara Schumann was not only the wife, supporter, consoler and muse of Robert Schumann, who would hardly have created his impressive life’s work without her help. She was the mother of eight children, whom she raised on her own having become a widow early on. Clara Schumann was also the most important and successful female pianist of the 19th century and a notable composer. Her work as a concert pianist and later on as an educator was both influential as well as instructive. She organised her concert tours across Europe with the help of a network of family members and colleagues – in a most effective and profitable manner.
The exhibition “Clara Schumann: Artist – Businesswoman – Mother” sheds light on and documents her varied and successful work as a composer, pianist, concert organiser and educator with autographs, historical photographs, first editions of her compositions and other displays. Selected pieces in the exhibition show her close ties to family and friends. The rooms of the Kurpfälzisches Museum provide the ideal historical space for these exhibits.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Joachim Draheim (Karlsruhe). The presentation displays selected objects from his collection.
