Heidelberg ZONTA Club selects young woman scientist

For her outstanding dissertation in medicine, Dr. Sarah Gagiannis has been selected for the 2009 Fellowship Award from the Heidelberg ZONTA Club. The award, in the amount 3,000 euros and given in conjunction with Heidelberg University, recognizes her excellent doctoral dissertation in the field of oncology. Dr. Gagiannis received her doctorate from the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg. The prize will be presented at a ceremony on Tuesday, 13 April 2010. The Rector of Heidelberg’s University of Education, Prof. Dr. Anneliese Wellensiek, will also give a talk on the subject of “Gains in Education”.

Sarah Gagiannis (b. 1981) studied medicine in Marburg and Heidelberg. Since September 2008 she has been on the staff of the Federal Armed Forces’ Hospital in Ulm. Her doctoral dissertation, completed in June 2008, was supervised by Privatdozent Dr. Tobias Schilling of Heidelberg University Hospital.

ZONTA International is a worldwide association of women who are either self-employed or hold executive positions. Their aim is to advance the status of women in legal, political, economic and professional terms. With its approx. 50 members, the Heidelberg ZONTA Club provides funding and assistance for regional and supra-regional projects supporting this aim. In addition, the club also selects socially committed secondary-school students for the annual Young Woman in Public Affairs award and young female academics for the biennial Zonta Fellowship in conjunction with Heidelberg University.

The award will be presented during the proceedings of the 3rd Zonta Rhine-Neckar Meeting 2010 next Tuesday (13 April) at the Europäischer Hof hotel, Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 1. Before the start of the meeting at 7 p.m., both the award recipient Dr. Gagiannis and representatives of the Heidelberg ZONTA Club will be available for photographs and questions.
