Katinka Sewing is assistant professor at the Institute for Classical Archaeology and Byzantine Archaeology, Department for Byzantine Archaeology and Art History. In addition to her teaching duties, she is student advisor, responsible for grade- and exam-administration, and is the contact person for many other organizational issues. In her doctoral thesis, she investigated an almost forgotten pilgrimage church at the harbor canal of Ephesus by combining archaeological approaches with the methods of historical building research. For the first time, she could place this important sanctuary within the existing canon of late antique pilgrimage sites. In the summer she can usually be found excavating in Turkey and is currently leading fieldwork on the so-called terrace church at Doliche near Gaziantep. Her research interests include the material culture of the Eastern Mediterranean, with a focus on Late Antique art and architecture, the lifeworld of women in the Late Antique-Byzantine period, and their reception in the archaeological research.

In the summer semester of 2024, she will be a visiting professor at the University of Warsaw.
