Press Release No. 89/2018
5 July 2018
Heidelberg University in second place in the Funding Atlas 2018 of the German Research Foundation (DFG)

In the ranking list of the 40 highest publicly funded universities in Germany, Heidelberg University is in second place with a total of 292.2 million euros in DFG funds. The results were published today in the Funding Atlas 2018 of the German Research Foundation. The DFG reports that Ruperto Carola falls between first-place Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich at 315.8 million euros and third-place RWTH Aachen University at 281 million euros. Heidelberg placed second for the first time in the last-published Funding Atlas 2015. Prior to that, LMU Munich and RWTH Aachen had always received the most DFG funding.

Broken down by individual academic fields, Heidelberg University is in second place behind LMU Munich in the life sciences. Ruperto Carola is represented in the top ten in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences.

The new DFG Funding Atlas is now in its eighth triennial issue. Since 1997 the largest research funding organisation in Germany has released the report, subtitled “Key Figures Relating to Publicly Funded Research in Germany.” The figures and data basis – the current volume documents the reporting period from 2014 to 2016 – have been continually expanded along with the evaluation criteria. The current issue also highlights research funding in the European and worldwide context along with 50 years of collaborative research centres.
