Frauke Melchior elected to German Research Foundation’s statutory body for research policy

Heidelberg molecular biologist Prof. Dr. Frauke Melchior has been elected a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG). The Senate is the DFG’s statutory body responsible for science policy. Frauke Melchior joins it for an initial period of three years, representing the cell and developmental biology sector. The election of the new Senate members took place in early July at the DFG General Assembly in Dortmund. Prof. Melchior heads a research group at Heidelberg University’s Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) and is a member of the DKFZ-ZMBH Alliance, the strategic cooperation between the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the ZMBH.

Frauke Melchior studied chemistry in Marburg and Bristol and did her doctorate at Marburg University‘s Faculty of Chemistry. She then worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen for two years before moving to the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla (USA), where she stayed for five years. From 1998 Melchior was head of a junior research group at the MPI of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich. In 2004 she was appointed professor of biochemistry at Göttingen University and in 2008 professor of molecular biology at Heidelberg University. Frauke Melchior is already a member of the DFG’s Senate Committee for Research Training Groups.

The Senate of the German Research Foundation’s is concerned with general research matters, promotes cooperation in research and advises governments, parliaments and public authorities by issuing scientifically founded statements. By instituting priority programmes and research units, the Senate plays a crucial role in research planning. It has 39 members from the scientific and academic communities, 36 of whom are elected by the General Assembly. Members by right of office are the president of the German Rectors’ Conference, the president of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and the president of the Max Planck Society.
