Enhancing Scholarly Investigation of the Ancient Orient

Press Release No. 2/2009
26 05 2009
Prof. Markus Hilgert of Heidelberg University’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilisations elected new president of the German Orient Society
Prof. Markus Hilgert of Heidelberg University’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilisations elected new president of the German Orient Society
At its recent assembly at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, the German Orient Society (Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft) elected Heidelberg professor of Assyriology Dr. Markus Hilgert as its next president. He succeeds Professor Hans Neumann (Münster) who had headed the Society since 2003 and now becomes vice-president. All other members of the executive board remain in office for the next three years.

“My particular concerns focus on two things,” said Hilgert about his aims as president. “One is to enhance scholarly engagement with the ancient Orient within the constantly changing parameters governing higher-education policy in the Federal Republic. The other is the humanitarian and culture-political situation in those countries with which the German Orient Society cooperates, for example Iraq.”

The German Orient Society was established in Berlin in 1898. Its central mission is to encourage research in ancient Oriental studies and to make it accessible to the public. Among the Society’s outstanding activities are its archaeological excavations in Assur, Babylon, Hattusha and Uruk and the scholarly investigation of the finds they come up with.
