Sophie Panel

Sophie Panel is currently PhD student at the Department for Political Science of the University of Heidelberg, and member of the research training group “Policy Performance of Autocratic and Democratic Regimes”. She earned her Master of Arts in political science at the Universities of Stuttgart and Bordeaux. In her research, she focuses on the influence of political institutions and regime types on the onset of intrastate conflicts. A complete CV can be found here.

 

Dissertation

In her dissertation, Sophie Panel seeks to explain why some types of political regimes are especially prone to intrastate conflicts. She analyzes the impact of institutional explanatory factors like the concentration of power, elections, and the mode of selection of the chief executive. She uses quantitative methods with a large-N design and analyzes statistical data for the period of 1946 to 2008.

The supervisor of the project is Prof. Dr. Sebastian Harnisch.
