Nonlinear Functional Analysis

This lecture being a Master course, the teaching language will be English unless all participants agree on German. Exercise classes are held in German unless some students prefer English.

We shall try administering the course in heiCO but as heiCO will not be fully functional early in the semester, please register in Müsli as well. The exercise classes will be coordinated there.

Contents

We will cover various topics in nonlinear functional analysis like linearization of operators between general Banach spaces and mapping degree theory. Both methods will be employed to obtain bifurcation results, both analytical and topological, for infinite dimensional systems.

The participants are assumed to have basic knowledge of functional analysis. Knowledge of the theory of partial differential equations or dynamical systems does not hurt but is not required.

Time and place

Lecture:

Mondays 14:15 - 15:45
SR B, INF 205 (Mathematikon)

Thursdays 14:15 - 15:45
SR C, INF 205 (Mathematikon)

Tutorials:

Thursdays 09:15 - 10:45
SR 6, INF 205 (Mathematikon)

The first tutorial will be held on April 25.

Exam

There will be a written exam at the end of the semester. Details will be announced as soon as we have been assigned a room and time. Admission to the exam rests on active participation in the exercise classes.
