Cooperativity in Highly Excited Rydberg Ensembles - Control and Entanglement  - “COHERENCE”

The main perspective of the “COHERENCE” network is to open the way for young researchers into an emerging field of fundamental physics research with very high scientific potential: The investigation of cooperative coherent effects in ensembles of highly excited (Rydberg) atoms. This goal will be achieved by strengthening the already established European and international cooperation in this subject and by offering unique training opportunities to the researchers.

The scientific motivation is based on the special properties of Rydberg atoms. Their extreme sensitivity to electric fields leads to ultra-long range interactions. Combined with the low temperatures produced by laser cooling, this results in an abundance of new phenomena and technological applications including: strongly correlated quantum systems, strong electrodynamic coupling and resonant energy transfer, Coulombic correlations and exotic molecules, fast quantum gates and single photon emitters, and precision electrometry and sensitive surface probes. Advances in cold Rydberg gases are underpinned by the development of state-of-the-art narrow-band tunable laser sources. Cold Rydberg physics has experienced explosive growth during recent years and now stands at the threshold of a number of key developments that will impact on a broad range of topics including: condensed matter physics, polymer and biophysics, molecular physics, quantum optics and quantum information, surface physics, plasma physics, and laser technology. This diverse range of topics combined with the close interplay between theory and experiment provides an ideal framework for training a new generation of Early Stage Researchers to the highest level of international excellence.
