University of Heidelberg Wins the MEDIA TENOR AWARD as “University Communicator 2007”

1 November 2007

The University of Heidelberg and the Humboldt University of Berlin come joint first in the University Communicator ranking for 2007

The media landscape is changing fast. Not only politicians and companies are vying for media attention but also universities and other academic institutions. Since July 2005 MEDIA TENOR has been evaluating media reports on academic institutions and it also awards an annual prize, the Academic Institutions Award. On 1 November 2007 the University of Heidelberg and the Humboldt University of Berlin received first prizes as "university communicators” at the Harnack-Haus conference venue of the Max Planck Society in Berlin.

Every mention of five lines or more in the print media and five seconds or more on television was analysed. The evaluation took place between July 2006 and June 2007.

Among the criteria were
  • size/length of the report
  • variety of topics
  • tone of the report
  • share of interviews and opinion components
  • presence of statements by experts
  • size/length of report in terms of public status (e.g. conferences).
The final ranking was based on the number of points awarded.

The University of Heidelberg and the Humboldt University of Berlin totted up 62.3 points each, which put them at the top of the list. The runners-up were the University of Munich (61.8), the Free University of Berlin (60.9) and the University of Göttingen (59.6). Last year’s winner was the University of Munich.
