Jaishri Atri, a master’s student in molecular biology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., has been awarded the scholarship from Heidelberg Alumni U.S. (HAUS), Heidelberg University’s alumni association in the U.S. In the 2014/2015 winter semester, she is enrolled in the master’s programme in the biosciences at Ruperto Carola and is working in the lab of Prof. Dr. Ilka Bischofs at the Center for Molecular Biology of Heidelberg University. To support her stay in Heidelberg, Atri received the sum of 5,000 dollars from the HAUS scholarship, first awarded in 2012.

The scholarship holder, who has been in Heidelberg since September, is enthusiastic about her work and her colleagues at Heidelberg University. She is particularly impressed by the fact that this year’s Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Stefan Hell, has a lab on the same floor she works on. “I have learnt a lot already, such as how to clone bacteria and new microscopy techniques,” says Jaishri Atri.

The HAUS selection committee was not just impressed by her academic achievements, but also by her proactice attitude. Atri reached out by herself to researchers and the International Relations Office to prepare for her stay in Heidelberg. “We are also happy to be able to support a master’s student for the first time,” says HAUS President Kathleen Lance. HAUS set up the scholarship fund specifically for contributions from U.S. alumni. The 2012 and 2013 scholarships were awarded to two bachelor’s students.  Students living in the U.S. can apply for the scholarship to finance an exchange sojourn or their full degree programme at Heidelberg University. Bachelor’s degree students receive aid in the amount of 3,000 dollars and master’s students 5,000 dollars.
