Professor Dr. Louise Gunning-Schepers (1951) was trained in medicine and public health in Groningen and at Johns Hopkins and obtained her PhD from the Erasmus University (EUR).
As a researcher Louise Gunning-Schepers worked at the University of Leuven and at the EUR. She also served as a policy staff member at the Dutch Ministry of Health. Her research concentrated on modeling population health for policy purposes (The Prevent model) and on Socio Economic Health Differences. She taught Public Health Epidemiology to medical students, Post graduate Public health students and PhD students.
In 1991 Louise Gunning-Schepers was appointed Professor of Social Medicine at the Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam, AMC/UvA. She was part of the faculty until 2010. From 2010 to 2017 she was a Distinguished University Professor for Health and Society at the University of Amsterdam.
From 1995 to 1997 Louise Gunning-Schepers was a member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy. From 1997 she served on the Executive Board of the AMC-UvA and also held the position of vice-dean. In 2001 she was appointed president of the Executive Board of the AMC-UvA and dean of the UvA’s Faculty of Medicine.
Between September 2010 and April 2012 Louise Gunning-Schepers was president of the Health Council of the Netherlands as well as University professor.
From 2012 until 2015 she was President of the University of Amsterdam and the University of Applied Sciences.
Louise Gunning-Schepers has held positions on numerous Supervisory boards. Currently she chairs the board of Schiphol, the board of ONVZ, the board of RegMedXB and is a member of the Supervisory board of the TU/e (Technical University Eindhoven).
She has been a member of Heidelberg University’s Academic Advisory Council since 2013.
