Short Bio

Sumantra joined the Chair of Development Economics as a doctoral candidate in fall 2017. He graduated from Delhi School of Economics in 1998. After receiving a scholarship from the International Monetary Fund, he acquired a master's degree in public policy from National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Tokyo, in 2015. He is a member of Indian Economic Service and a Director in Indian finance ministry. For the past two decades, he contributed in real-world economic policy making involving issues in financial, industrial, external, and energy sectors. He was involved in the implementation defined-contribution pensions system in India. Empirical research in development economics and field experiment interests him. His current project investigates the link between traditional social norms and women’s empowerment.
