International analysis names researchers whose publications are most cited worldwide
The recently published list of Highly Cited Researchers includes 14 academics from Heidelberg University, five more than last year. The list recognises researchers whose publications in their field are the most frequently cited worldwide. A total of 21 disciplines in the natural, life and social sciences are represented. The new cross-field category, introduced this year, identifies researchers whose wealth of publications had a major impact across multiple fields. At Ruperto Carola there are five scientists with a “cross-field performance”. Heidelberg University leads Germany in the list of Highly Cited Researchers.
Among the most highly cited researchers worldwide is Prof. Dr Ralf Bartenschlager (microbiology), who made the list for the sixth time in a row. Those recognised for the fifth consecutive year include Prof. Dr A. Stephen K. Hashmi (chemistry), Prof. Dr Hugo A. Katus (clinical medicine) and Prof. Dr Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg (currently in the new cross-field category). Prof. Dr Andreas von Deimling (neuroscience and behaviour) appears on the list for the fourth time. As in the past two years, the list identifies Prof. Dr Marcella Rietschel as one of the most highly cited researchers (now in the cross-field category). The list once again recognises Prof. Dr Werner Hacke, this year in two fields – in clinical medicine as well as neuroscience and behaviour. Other highly cited researchers include Prof. Dr Markus W. Büchler and Prof. Dr Jost B. Jonas (clinical medicine); Dr Marcus E. Kleber, Prof. Dr Laura Na Liu and Prof. Dr Winfried März (cross-field); Associate Prof. Dr Jacomine Krijnse-Locker (microbiology); and Prof. Dr Rolf-Detlef Treede (neuroscience and behaviour).
The citation count reflects how often a publication is cited in the papers of colleagues, making it the most important indicator of a publication’s scientific influence. The current list of Highly Cited Researchers, published by Clarivate Analytics, assessed publications between 2006 and 2016. Highly cited publications are those in the top 1% by citations in their field and year of publication. This list was first issued in 2001; it was revised for the first time in 2014 and has appeared annually since. It currently names approximately 4,000 researchers in 21 specific fields as well as 2,000 for “cross-field performance”.
