Ruperto Carola No. 1 in Germany in three subjects

In the QS Subject Ranking 2012, Heidelberg University again holds a leadership position in the national and international comparison. Ruperto Carola leads Germany in biology, medicine, and the geosciences. Overall, Heidelberg is among the top fifty institutions in the world in six disciplines. In fact, in five of those cases, the university significantly improved its standing over last year.

In the biosciences, Heidelberg climbed to 34 (from 48), making it, like last year, the best university in Germany. Its ranking in medicine likewise improved. Heidelberg University rose from 49th to 41st, again positioning it ahead of all other German universities. Heidelberg also leads German universities in the geosciences, having emerged from the 51-100 ranking group to 50th place.

At 42nd (up from 48th), Heidelberg is the second-best university in chemistry behind Munich’s Technical University. Heidelberg also placed second nationally behind Berlin’s Humboldt University in philosophy, moving up from 50th to 46th. At 27th in physics, Heidelberg University trailed only slightly behind last year’s excellent ranking (26th). Here Heidelberg ranks third in Germany, led by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and RWTH Aachen.

The assessment in the QS Subject Ranking is based on data from the QS World University Ranking from the fall of 2011. The indicators for the individual subject rankings were calculated from a subset of the data from the main ranking, namely data from surveys of academics and employers as well as citation analyses. The QS Subject Ranking was published for the first time in 2011.
