Following the overwhelming international response to the ceremony marking the 100th birthday of Hans-Georg Gadamer the University has made a video recording of the event available on the Internet. Alongside the text of the speeches held, the recording can be found in a special edition of the "Ruperto Online" web magazine
The film contains excerpts of the speeches of welcome by the Rector of the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Siebke, and the President of Heidelberg's Academy of Sciences, Professor Dr. Gottfried Seebaß. These are followed by appreciations of Gadamer's achievements from Federal President Johannes Rau, the Chancellor of Germany's Orden Pour le mérite (Arts and Sciences), Prof. Dr. Hans Georg Zachau, and the director of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Bubner. Subsequently viewers can follow the festive address by the Minister-President of the state of Baden-Württemberg, Erwin Teufel.
Gadamer: Obeying rules is not enough!
The video also captures the spontaneous response of guest-of-honour Hans-Georg Gadamer at the end of the proceedings. "I am no wiser than others but I believe that the circumstances of my life, the fact that I have lived through such a long period of history means that I can draw on a large fund of experience. And I sincerely ask you to take one thing it has taught me very seriously. All of us have to make our own decisions. Merely obeying rules is not enough."
At the time of the ceremony itself the complete live transmission of the event attracted many viewers to the home-page of the University of Heidelberg on the Internet.
