As of October 2004, the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) at the University of Heidelberg is offering a new English-language postgraduate course. The one-year, interdisciplinary Master of Arts programme in American Studies offers 30 participants annually the opportunity to achieve interdisciplinary competence in the field of American studies.
The curriculum covers politics and history of the United States, as well as the American legal system, geography, literature and religious studies. Applicants must have a university degree (for Germany Magister, state examination or Diplom, for other countries see HCA homepage). Fees amount to 5,000 euros, applications for grants should be addressed to the HCA. Students from Germany and elsewhere with the necessary qualifications should send in their applications to the HCA by 15 May 2004. For further information go to the HCA homepage: www.hca.uni-hd.de. The HCA interdisciplinary research centre was founded on 1 May 2003 on the initiative of Heidelberg University professors and lecturers working at the departments and institutes of Economics, English and American Studies, Geography, History, Law, Musicology, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology and Theology. The founding director is Professor Detlef Junker, holder of the Curt Engelhorn chair of American history at the Department of History of the University of Heidelberg.
