The Rector of the University of Heidelberg, Prof. Dr. Juergen Siebke, will be in Syria from 3 to 9 October 1999. His programme includes visits to the universities of Damascus, Latakia and Aleppo and the presentation of "Alumni.med.Live" at the German-Syrian Medical Conference in Damascus. There Prof. Siebke will be meeting representatives of various Syrian ministries. The purpose of the visit is to further cement the traditionally close ties between the University of Heidelberg and the Middle East. "Many of our foreign medical students and graduates come from the Middle East," Siebke comments, "and this continuing education project will be especially interesting for them."
At present the University of Heidelberg is collaborating with four other Baden-Wuerttemberg universities on an Internet-based continuing education programme in medicine called "Alumni.med.Live". The project is funded and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, the German Academic Exchange Service and Baden-Wuerttemberg's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Art.
The presentation in Damasus will give medical graduates and the 300 participants at the Medical Conference the opportunity to find out more about the continuing education project. Also present on the spot are the alumni units of the Universities of Freiburg, Mannheim, Tuebingen and Ulm. They will also be providing Syrian students and scientists with information about study and research openings at German universities. The overall coordination lies with "Heidelberg Alumni International", the University's global network for maintaining contact with former students from all over the world.
