The University and the Education College in Heidelberg will soon have a new joint centre for media didactics. Emphasis will be on adult education and further education for academics in the use of the new media. The announcement was made to the press by higher education and research minister Klaus von Trotha in Stuttgart. The rectors of the two institutions of higher learning are gratified that the joint application they put in for the new centre and the partly unconventional ideas mooted in it have found such a favourable reception at ministry level. Vice-rector of Heidelberg University, Prof. Dr. Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik, saw this as an opportunity of pooling the specific strengths of the two institutions.
When it starts work, the Centre will be offering a Bachelor course for students going into teaching, which theycan take alongside their other courses. With respect to research at the Centre, Professor Weigelin-Schwiedrzik said that the "main but not exclusive emphasis" would be on the use of the new media in adult education. In addition, the Centre will also act as a service station for all staff members of the two institutions conducting media-didactic projects in their own fields.
