Alfred Krupp Research Prize for Heidelberg Chemist Prof. Bernhard Breit

1 million marks in research monies spread over 5 years—Rector Prof. Dr. Jürgen Siebke: "Further recognition of oustanding work in the field of stereoselective catalysis"

The board of curators of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation has announced its intention of sharing the Foundation's research prize 2000 between two recipients. One is a physicist from Konstanz, the other 34-year-old chemistry professor Bernhard Breit of the University of Heidelberg. Prof. Bereit receives 1 million marks in research monies. Rector Prof. Dr. Jürgen Siebke congratulated the Heidelberg recipient: "After being awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize last year you have now received a further token of recognition for your outstanding achievements in the field of stereoselective catalysis. This is not only an honour for you but also for the University of Heidelberg."

The Alfried Krupp Research Prize is awarded to scientists of the younger generation working in the natural sciences and engineering. The aim of the prize is to improve the scope and research opportunities available to professors of C3 rank by providing research and equipment funding to the tune of 1 million marks.

Constructive cooperation between university and industry

Professor Berhard Breit (b. 1966) is professor of organic chemistry at Heidelberg University. His present research interests concentrate on stereoselective synthesis with the aid of a catalyst directing group (CDG). Breit's work in designing ligands for industrial hydroformylation in conjunction with the BASF company are widely considered to be an exemplary instance of constructive cooperation between universities and industry.

The activities of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation date back to January 1968. In accordance with the wishes of its initiator, it dedicates the funds accruing to it from its holding in the Friedrich Krupp company exclusively to the support of activities in the public interest. Since 1968 the funding the Foundation has allocated to projects in the fields of science (research and teaching), education, health and sport/culture has totalled 619 million marks.
