Newsletter IBF University of Heidelberg, 3rd quarter 2020

Dear IBF-users,

after numerous Corona-info mails, information of this e-mail is rather general and we ask for your support with regard to some relevant issues addressed in the following.

Documentation of animal experiments

During nearly any audit by the local authorities, there are findings with regard of comprehensive documentation of animal experiments. To comply with the regulations, the following information is essential.

Requirements by local authorities dated 07.05.2020:

Completed treatments and procedures have to be indicated on the respective cage cards (date + treatment/procedure).

Intention: §1 (1) Nr.2 (TierSchVersV) requires daily adspective controls with regard to the animal’s wellbeing.  §1 (1) Nr.4 requires direct corrective if compulsory demands may not be followed, which may lead to pain, suffering or damage of the animals.

- The Monitoring as well as the judgement of wellbeing is only possible with the knowledge of what has been done yet. The person in charge of controlling may not be the one conducting the experiments; caretaker staff and animal welfare officers always need to access respective documentation.

Conduction of animal experiments

In the course of every in vivo project it has to be strictly considered that each step and procedure exactly follow the protocol given under point 27 in the proposal submitted to Karlsruhe. Any changes in the procedure must be declared and send via the respective animal welfare officer. The changed protocol can only be applied after acceptance of the changes by the Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe. Changes have to be communicated by the project leader to all persons indicated on the respective proposal.

Breeding of experimental animals

Breeding can take place to maintain the line, but also to get mice for experimental purposes. In addition to the caretakers, it is necessary to involve the respective animal welfare officer and provide the license number for which the animals are going to be used.

Working and use of the IBF

Access to the IBF and respective experimental areas requires prior instruction and activation of your personal access card. The dissemination of cards and multiple use by several members of a research group will lead to complete inactivation of the cards of all group members until the problem is solved.

Billing addresses

For the registration for courses or seminars we need full and complete information about the address the bill is going to be send to. Please also make sure who is the one to pay the bill. The certificate handling cannot be proceeded otherwise.

Use of hygienic equipment

Due to the ongoing shortage of certain materials like masks and gloves, we ask you to sustainably use the provided materials in the manlocks. The material is provided for professional use only and not for personal utilization or takeaway.

Courses/Seminars

The courses started again with some changes in the organization. Theoretical parts are now available as video lectures. The practical parts are structured according to the general hygienic rules as good as possible.

Seminars will be provided online until further notice.

S1 Instruction

The usual way to have “live” S1 instructions will not be possible this autumn. Nonetheless there is a strict requirement of original signatures. Currently we work a solution and will let you know how to progress in November as soon as possible.

We appreciate your understanding and support.

Stay happy and healthy.

Best wishes,

Sabine Chourbaji
