Leibniz Lecture meets Heidelberg Lecture
November 2, 2025
On Sunday, November 2, 2025, the Heidelberg University Office Kyoto (HUOK) and the DFG Office Japan jointly organize a lecture to mark the HUOK's 10th anniversary, combining the “Leibniz Lecture” and “Heidelberg Lecture” series.
The Heidelberg Lectures welcome outstanding researchers from Heidelberg University to Japan, and we are particularly pleased to welcome a scientist who has also been awarded the DFG's Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize this time.
At this event, organized in close cooperation with the DFG Office Japan, Prof. Pernice, experimental physicist at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics at Heidelberg University, will give a lecture entitled “Photonics for Artificial Intelligence and Neuromorphic Computing.” For further information, please refer to the abstract of the topic.
Prof. Pernice is a pioneer in the field of neuromorphic photonic computing, i.e., neural networks that use light instead of electrons. He combines optical methods of physical data processing with parallel calculations, which are of great importance for the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI). His research thus transcends the traditional boundaries of various disciplines, including natural sciences, computer science, engineering, chemistry, and the life sciences, thereby realizing a transdisciplinary approach that is particularly promoted at Heidelberg University. His research results are also groundbreaking for the investigation of methods that can reduce the energy consumption of AI computer hardware and thus contribute to sustainability in the field of artificial intelligence.
