Research Summary

Retinal degeneration is an event associated with several disease pathologies, including multiple sclerosis (MS) where it can occur both in association with, and independently of, optic neuritis. Using the brown Norway rat model of MS, where retinal ganglion cell degeneration is an early and robust feature following immunisation with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein, we aim to elucidate neurodegenerative mechanisms which underlie the selective vulnerability of neuronal populations under neuroinflammatory conditions. Ultimately, the development of novel neuroprotective strategies will complement the immunomodulatory therapies currently available.
