Workshop: Flexible working hour models to better combine family and academia

Flexible working hour models are attractive. They promote the compatibility of academia and family life, and equal opportunities for women and men. A talk on this very topic will mark the beginning of the event “Vereinbarkeit von Wissenschaft und Familie.” The speaker will talk about studies and programmes that are currently underway at EAF, she will introduce their findings and experiences with practical implementation and engage in discussion with the participants. It is possible to join the speaker’s interactive talk (10am-12:30pm) as well as the workshop (1:30pm-4pm). Both events can be attended independently of one another.

Peer Coaching – Peer group meetings guided by a supervisor

You have chosen a profession in an academic setting, you are reflecting on and planning your career; you have already experienced success, but you have reached limits, too. An important issue on the way to professorship is the professionalization as a university teacher. There are many aspects to this job, some are obvious, some are part of the "hidden curriculum". With our "Peer Coaching" training programme we would like to offer you a forum for exchange among peers, for the supervision of scenarios from everyday academic life and for deepening your knowledge of internal university processes and activities.

"Peer Coaching" is advice from equals for equals. It is suited for people from different disciplines but similar professional fields who would like to support each other. By receiving feedback from others, "Peer Coaching" offers you the possibility to adjust your own perspectives, to get to the heart of things or clarify important aspects.

Key topics

  • confidence at work

  • professional handling of competition

Your voice matters – Transporting academic and leadership competence vocally

That academic competence is a prerequisite for a career in science and academia is, of course, a given – but it also has to be communicated skilfully. Whether in courses, presentations, or committees, your voice has to be present and convincing. The tone and sound of our voice can sometimes be more significant than the words we use: a clear, high-pitched voice oftentimes brings with it different associations than a deep, sonorous one. Your statements are the most convincing when sound and content complement each other. Your voice, therefore, is an important factor not only for presenting yourself, but also for your career as a whole. In this course you will learn the theoretical and practical basics for a powerful and effective voice, so that you can fully tap your individual speech potential with knowledge and practice. Science goes public – Connecting to the world beyond academia

When science and the media meet, two worlds collide: Where science strives to be detailed, comprehensive, the media has to present content that is entertaining and understood by everyone. Getting to the gist of things, reducing messages to their essential core, checking news for their significance, informing and entertaining their readers, listeners, audience – these are some of the tasks that editorial staff are being confronted with on a daily basis. The media is an important partner when it comes to communicating your academic work in a public context. It is therefore all the more helpful to know and use the ropes of public relations. In the course of this workshop you will learn which aspects of your academic research have public import and relevance and how you can market them confidently via a range of channels (PM, (TV) interviews, elevator pitch…).
