Consultation of the European Societas Oecumenica on Nationalism and Migration from the Perspective of European Churches
The Societas Oecumenica was founded in 1978 as a research network for institutions working in the field of interdenominational studies and ecumenism. The Societas Oecumenica holds bi-annual consultations.
The title of this year’s bi-annual consultation of the Societas Oecumenica is: “On Nations and the Churches: Ecumenical Responses to Nationalism and Migration.” It will take place on August 23-28, 2018, in Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen, and is funded by DFG and Renovabis.
The keynote address will be given by Prof. Dr. Peter Phan (Georgetown University, Washington D.C.) on August 24th at 4:00pm in the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University. The keynote lecture is titled: “Migration, Nationalism, and Ecumenical Unity: Challenges and Opportunities for the Churches.”
The 2018 consultation explores recent developments of new forms of nationalism within the context of migration and the refugee crisis in Europe. While churches agree on the transnational character of the Christian faith, they differ in their understanding of the relation between church and nation. The difference has consequences for the church’s approach and engagement in the challenges of migration. The topic will be discussed in a number of different formats: lectures from distinguished international scholars who are from various parts of Europe, through workshops, and in paper presentations.
Below is the program for Friday, August 24, 2018, beginning at 4:00pm in the Alte Aula of Heidelberg University:
