Taiwan Lecture Series 2018: Ethnicity, Identity and Marginality in Taiwan—Multimedial Reflections Convener: Prof. Dr. Barbara MittlerThis term’s Taiwan Lecture Series which is held in cooperation with the SOAS Taiwan Studies Program, will highlight questions of ethnicity, identity and marginality. It will introduce a number of film makers, novel writers, composers and scholars working on these topics in film, literature, music and it will also include a workshop and performance of Händel’s Messiah in a recomposition including Taiwan composer Chen Cheng-wen and the Beiguan Water Stage Ensemble. |

In mid-July we are expecting controversial Taiwan Film Director Kevin Hui-Jen Lee: a TV news cameraman since 1994, Kevin Lee has worked at half of the dozen news stations in Taiwan. He has won numerous awards and recognitions for his work. A daring master of many topics and styles, Director Kevin H.J.Lee’s greatest interest is with the interconnection between politics and society. His documentaries uncover public secrets, corruption and ironies between Hong Kong, Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. His films and the roundtable discussion and introduction to this work will all take place in the Karlstorbahnhofkino!

Lee 2013 不能戳的秘密II:國家機器 Unveil the Truth II: State Apparatus won the Grand Prize and best documentary at the 2014 Taipei Film Awards. The jury considered that the film maintained an uplifting and humorous tone, while exposing the chaotic madness of government bureaucracy, thus illustrating the dark side of Taiwanese society. Currently, Kevin Lee is working on Unveil the Truth III. |

In 蘋果的滋味 The Taste of Apple which, in 2016, won the Taipei Film Award ceremony, Kevin Lee celebrates the existence of freedom of speech in Taiwan: “I realized how much of an impact “Apple” (nickname of the Next Media, a Hong Kong media corporation entered Taiwan,) has on Taiwanese readers’ reading habit, and how it changed the traditional media ecology in Taiwan". |

Screening: Self-Censorship with an introduction by the Director, Kevin H.J. Lee and Wennie Liu Taiwan 2017 / Regie: Kevin H.J. Lee / 117 min. Self-censorship begins by depicting a series of protests by the Beijing artist, Hua Yong, which eventually led to his arrest and imprisonment by the Chinese government. It subsequently moves to the mysterious disappearances of five shareholders from Causeway Bay Books in Hong Kong, and then onto incidents involving Chou Tzi-yu, Leon Dai and Lee Ming-che. It thoroughly, and in great detail, exposes the Chinese government’s pervasive control over “Greater Chinese” society. |
