Prof. Xuefeng Wei Donates Rubbings of Eastern Han Carved Tomb Reliefs

On June 14, 2016, Professor Xuefeng Wei, Director of the Sichuan Provincial Museum and a renowned archeologist and art historian in China donated 40 rare rubbings of carved tomb reliefs to the Institute of East Asian Art History, Heidelberg University. All of these rubbings, dated to the Eastern Han dynasty, were made from the carved bricks or architectural fragments found in Sichuan tombs, now in the collection of Sichuan Provincial Museum. They will be permanently preserved in the Library of East Asian Art History. As an essential component of the project “Shifting Paradigms in Art-Historical Training: Connecting Heidelberg University with China’s Leading Museums” (2016-2017), funded by the Excellence Initiative II, these rubbings are available for object-based teaching and studying of art history at the Institute of East Asian Art History. They also provide students opportunities to work with partner museums and develop exhibitions independently.
