Professor Berg's Current Book Project

A House Divided: A History of the USA since the 1960s
(Das zerstrittene Haus: Eine Geschichte der USA seit den 1960er Jahren)
 
After the Second World War the United States were widely viewed as the model of a democratic "Civic Culture" based on a liberal consensus. However, in recent decades America has become a democracy in crisis, according to numerous observers both at home and abroad. The election and presidency of Donald J. Trump have driven polarization to new heights. Today, it appears that Americans can only agree on one fact, namely that they are hopelessly divided. In my book I will trace the history of polarization in the United States since the 1960s by probing the political, ideological, social, economic, ethnic, and cultural conflicts and driving forces, which have, to quote the famous words of Abraham Lincoln, made America a "House Divided".
