International and Interdisciplinary Academic Conference on the Occasion of the 400th Anniversary of the Wedding

To mark the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the 1613 wedding, the History Department of Heidelberg University, represented by the Chair of Early Modern History of Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen, is holding in cooperation with the German-British Society Rhine Neckar an academic conference from 5th to 7th September 2013 in the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum Heidelberg.

In this conference, our focus will be the court culture of the Early Modern period, which predominantly served as a "multi-media" platform for princely self-promotion. Together with the political and confessional context of the wedding, this provides a broad thematic spectrum for stimulating academic exchange and discussion. International specialists in the disciplines of history, art history, theology and literature will approach the subject in different ways and provide a context for comparison, with special attention on the cultural interaction between Germany and Britain. At the time, the reception of this historical event was pan-European, and today this is paralleled by research interest on a transnational level.

The conference is being financed by the German Research Association (DFG) as well as the City of Heidelberg Foundation.
