NISIBIN - Research Center for Aramean Studies
CALL FOR PAPER AND INVITATION
FOR THE 7TH SYMPOSIUM FOR ARAMEAN STUDIES
We would like to invite you to the interdisciplinary Aramaic-language Symposium that will be held from the 1st to 3rd of Oktober, 2022 at the Research Center for Aramean Studies of the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East, Semitic Studies at the University of Heidelberg.
The present Symposium of Aramean Studies continues the tradition of the Symposium "Suryoye l-Suryoye", which began in 2002 and then took place six times over the course of twelve years. The goal back then was, as it is now, to offer scientists and advanced students the opportunity to present latest research on their own language, literature, history or art and to discuss it with the interested audience.
The event intends to provide an overview of the aramean research fields, as well as to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation between scientists from different disciplines and to initiate new research projects. The Symposium also aims to encourage young people to engage in Aramean Studies more.
The speakers and the interested audience, regardless of which Syrian denomination they belong to, will find a platform beyond the political disputes where they can reflect on themselves scientifically in their own Aramaic language and exchange ideas about essential scientific projects for the community. It is a forum unique in its kind in scholarship and important for the self-understanding of own community.
The article should deal with one of the following topics:
I. Historical Aspect
Social and Cultural History
II. Cultural Aspect
Migration, Ethnicity, Identity, Religiosity
III. Linguistic Aspect
Challenges for the Development of the Aramaic Spoken Language: Scripting and Publications. Language contact with the national languages.
IV. Political Aspect
Sayfo. Political and Social Situation in the Region of Origin
V. Artistic Aspect
Art and music history and architecture
A total of 18 contributions are planned (each 20 minutes lecture + 10 minutes discussion). The Symposium starts punctually on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and ends on Monday with lunch. We would be pleased to welcome you as a speaker or participant at the symposium!
