Application for Admission
Prerequisite for the acceptance as a doctoral student is a higher education qualification that is recognised in Germany. As a rule this is a qualification equivalent to a “Diplom”, “Magister”, master's degree or “Staatsexamen” awarded by an approved university.
For candidates who do not hold an equivalent to the above mentioned university degrees exceptions may be considered after passing a qualifying assessment.
To become a doctoral student at the faculty you first have to find a supervisor for your doctoral project.

Together with your supervisor you can apply for acceptance as doctoral candidate at the faculty.
How to apply for admission as a doctoral candidate:
1. Online registration at the heiDOCS portal.
2. Submission of the following documents
- Application for Admission as a Doctoral Candidate
- Agreement on Doctoral Studies
- Curriculum Vitae
- Certified copies of degree certificates
- Copy of identity card / passport
- Proof of German or English language skills (not necessary for native-speakers).

The acceptance as doctoral candidate is valid for three years and can be extended in reasonable cases.

Enrolment
If you have been accepted as doctoral candidate at the faculty (received the letter of admission (Annahme als Doktorand/in) from the faculty) you generally have to enrol at Heidelberg University.
